Long-distance transport is one of the most stressful experiences horses undergo, with welfare implications from loading, journey conditions and arrival management.
Horse transport involves multiple simultaneous stressors: confinement, unfamiliar companions, motion, noise and often temperature extremes. The immune suppression caused by transport stress makes respiratory infection extremely common after long journeys. Fatigue horses cannot hold posture in moving vehicles, increasing fall and injury risk. Best practice includes well-maintained vehicles with good airflow, familiar companions where possible, regular rest stops on very long journeys and skilled low-stress loading and unloading procedures. Pre-transport health checks and post-arrival monitoring are essential welfare components.
