The scientific consensus on fish sentience and pain has shifted substantially in the past decade. While the subjective experience of pain in fish remains philosophically uncertain, the physiological and behavioural evidence for nociception is now robust. Regulatory recognition is catching up — several countries now legally recognise fish sentience. The scale of fish killed in aquaculture makes even small improvements in per-animal welfare conditions enormously impactful in aggregate. Slaughter method reform, stocking density reduction and improved handling are the most impactful near-term interventions.
