Canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome is the dog equivalent of Alzheimer's disease, affecting the majority of senior dogs and causing significant welfare compromise.
Cognitive dysfunction syndrome causes genuine cognitive decline with welfare implications including confusion, anxiety and disrupted rest. Affected dogs may become lost in familiar spaces, fail to recognise family members and show significant nocturnal restlessness. These changes are distressing for both dog and owner. The condition is not a normal part of ageing and is amenable to management. Selegiline, aniproline diets and environmental enrichment have documented benefit. Early recognition — using validated cognitive assessment tools — allows earlier intervention and better welfare outcomes.
