Environmental enrichment in fish aquaculture is a developing field showing that simple structural modifications improve fish behaviour and welfare significantly.
Fish aquaculture enrichment is an emerging field with strong early evidence for welfare benefits. Barren tanks are physiologically and behaviourally impoverished environments for species evolved in complex natural habitats. Simple enrichment — substrate, flow variation, structural complexity — reduces stress hormones, aggressive behaviour and stereotypies. Critically, many enrichment interventions are cost-neutral or cost-positive through reduced injury and disease. The perception that fish welfare enrichment is economically prohibitive does not match the evidence. Developing species-specific enrichment standards should be a priority for welfare-conscious aquaculture operators.
