Welfare Considerations

Kennel cough causes significant discomfort — persistent coughing disrupts sleep, causes throat pain and interferes with normal activity. The disease spreads rapidly through social dog settings. Vaccination provides good protection against the most common strains but does not eliminate all risk, as the kennel cough complex involves multiple pathogens. Dogs that develop kennel cough should be rested from social settings and treated with supportive care. In most healthy dogs the disease is self-limiting, but veterinary assessment is appropriate for dogs with severe or prolonged illness, particularly if systemic signs develop.
