Welfare Considerations

Catfish welfare is frequently dismissed because these species are robust survivors of poor conditions. However, survival does not equal welfare — catfish farmed at extreme densities experience chronic crowding stress, elevated cortisol and increased aggression and disease. Their tolerance of low oxygen conditions allows practices that would kill other species, but this does not mean they do not suffer. Live catfish transport and sale in crowded tanks causes prolonged stress. Welfare standards for catfish farming remain poorly developed globally, despite the enormous numbers involved.
