Dog paw health is often overlooked but paw injuries, burns and chronic conditions cause significant pain and require active prevention and management.
Paw injuries cause acute pain that impairs a dog's mobility and psychological wellbeing. Hot pavement burns are entirely preventable — the five-second hand test before walking on any surface should be standard practice in summer. Ice melt chemicals used in winter cause chemical burns and systemic toxicity if not rinsed promptly. Regular paw inspection — between the toes, around nail beds and under the pads — allows early identification of infections, foreign bodies and injuries. Overgrown nails are painful and alter gait, causing secondary musculoskeletal problems. Routine paw care is simple but often neglected.
