Welfare Considerations

Horses that cannot access dry ground develop leg swelling, skin infections and joint problems. The welfare solution requires infrastructure investment: field drainage, rotational grazing to rest pastures, hard-standing areas or rubber surfaces for feeding and resting, and sacrifice paddocks that absorb winter use. These are welfare necessities, not optional upgrades, in climates with wet winters.
