Clouded leopard breeding protocols demonstrate the power of welfare science applied to conservation practice. The shift from conventional adult introduction (which frequently ended in female death) to raise-together protocols (which creates tolerant bonds) represents a welfare improvement that simultaneously solved a conservation problem. Animals are no longer subjected to the trauma of forced adult introductions with unknown, potentially aggressive conspecifics. This case study should inform breeding programme design for other species: welfare consideration often reveals solutions to seemingly intractable management problems.
