Effective analgesics exist for farm animal pain, but their use remains inconsistent. Closing the gap between welfare science knowledge and farm practice is an urgent welfare priority.
The gap between available pain management tools and their use in farm practice is one of the most significant preventable welfare failures in the livestock industry. Effective, affordable analgesics exist for virtually all common painful procedures — yet many are still performed without analgesia. Barriers include underestimation of animal pain, cost perception, veterinary access, and habit. Closing this gap requires education (farmers cannot prescribe what they do not know is needed), legislative requirements (mandatory analgesia for specific procedures), veterinary engagement, and assurance schemes that require documented analgesia use. The science is not in question — the challenge is implementation.
