Saiga antelopes face one of the most dramatic population crises of any large mammal. Captive management is challenging but conservation need is urgent.
Saiga antelope welfare in captivity is consistently problematic. Their extreme stress sensitivity, migratory nature, and adaptation to open semi-arid habitats means even large, naturalistic zoo enclosures fail to meet their needs. Chronic stress leads to poor health outcomes, reproductive failure, and shortened lifespans in captivity. The improved wild population status reduces the conservation justification for captive holding at facilities unable to achieve acceptable welfare. Conservation investment is better directed at protecting and expanding wild populations and addressing the environmental triggers of mass mortality events. This is a case where conservation and welfare arguments converge on the same conclusion: protect the wild.
