Sheep farmed in extensive upland systems face welfare challenges unique to their environment: harsh weather, limited intervention, and distance from veterinary care.
Extensive hill sheep systems present genuine welfare trade-offs. The benefits — natural grazing behaviour, low stocking density, freedom of movement — are real. But the welfare challenges of harsh environments, difficult detection of individual animal problems, and limited intervention capacity are equally real. Welfare monitoring in extensive systems requires adapted approaches: regular gathering for health checks, helicopter or drone-assisted monitoring of remote areas, and breed selection for hardiness appropriate to the environment. The welfare standard for extensive systems cannot be identical to intensive systems — but "natural" does not mean welfare-acceptable, and preventable suffering must still be prevented.
