Mice and rats constitute over 90% of animals used in biomedical research. Improving their housing, handling, and experimental conditions represents the largest opportunity for laboratory animal welfare improvement.
Rodent research welfare has advanced significantly through the application of refinement science that both improves animal welfare and produces better research data. The insight that stressed animals produce unreliable data has motivated welfare improvements that benefit both animals and science. Social housing reduces chronic isolation stress; single housing should be permitted only when scientifically justified and time-limited. Handling refinement — using tunnel or cup handling rather than tail grasping — reduces acute stress during routine procedures. Environmental enrichment including nesting material, hides, and running wheels addresses natural behavioural needs. Recognising and responding to pain and distress using validated behavioural and physiological indicators enables earlier humane endpoints. The field of refinement science continues to generate evidence-based improvements that raise baseline welfare standards across research institutions globally.
