Dog Separation Anxiety: Assessment, Treatment, and Prevention Strategies

Separation anxiety is among the most distressing canine welfare conditions. Understanding its causes, assessing severity, and implementing evidence-based treatment significantly reduces dog suffering.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Separation anxiety causes intense psychological distress that significantly impairs welfare quality. Dogs experiencing separation anxiety are not being manipulative — they are expressing genuine panic at the absence of attachment figures. Treatment requires addressing both the immediate anxiety responses and the underlying emotional regulation capacity. Medication reduces anxiety levels sufficiently to allow behaviour modification to be effective; behaviour modification alone is often insufficient for severe cases. The treatment programme requires owner commitment over months — graduated alone-time training cannot be rushed without triggering regression. Prevention through early independence training — short periods alone from puppyhood, taught that departures are safe and temporary — is substantially more effective than cure. Post-COVID puppy cohorts need particular attention to separation preparation as many have limited experience of owner absence.
