Sea cage design represents an engineering challenge with profound welfare implications. Fish in poorly designed or managed cages experience chronic stress from crowding, poor water quality, and inability to perform natural behaviours like depth selection and schooling in coherent groups. Cage positioning in areas with adequate water flow is fundamental — stagnant conditions rapidly deteriorate water quality and expose fish to accumulating waste. The aquaculture industry has made incremental improvements in cage design and management, but intensive production pressures continue to drive high stocking densities that compromise welfare. Independent welfare auditing of cage parameters remains limited in most producing countries.
