The cold-air adaptations that allow snow leopards to thrive at altitude become liabilities in warmer climate facilities. Even in accredited zoos at appropriate climatic latitudes, providing adequate vertical terrain, space for their naturally wide-ranging behaviour, and appropriate substrate and complexity is challenging. Social management is also complex — snow leopards are highly solitary and introductions between individuals must be managed carefully to prevent injury. The conservation value of zoo snow leopard programs is real given the precarious wild population, but individual welfare costs must be honestly assessed and minimised through best-practice husbandry.
