Livestock pain scoring systems represent one of the most important welfare advances of the past two decades. Before these tools, pain assessment in farm animals relied on subjective impression — with the result that stoic species like sheep and cattle were systematically under-treated. Validated scoring systems that train observers to recognise specific pain indicators have demonstrated their effectiveness by showing that trained observers identify more pain, treat more promptly, and produce animals that recover faster. The challenge now is moving these tools from research settings into routine farm and veterinary practice. Barriers include time pressure, economic disincentives for analgesic use, and training availability. Embedding pain scoring into routine veterinary and farm protocols would represent a significant step forward.
