The aggressive nature of sea bass means bite wounds and fin damage are common welfare concerns, particularly during mixed-size groups. Slaughter welfare varies considerably between facilities, with many not using pre-stunning. The EU's growing focus on aquaculture welfare is driving research and some regulatory development, but implementation across Mediterranean producer nations with very different regulatory traditions remains uneven. Consumer awareness of sea bass welfare issues is low, limiting market pressure for improvement.
