Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) offer precise environmental control. Understanding how this technology can serve fish welfare alongside sustainability goals is increasingly important.
Recirculating Aquaculture Systems represent a genuine welfare opportunity because they allow precise control of the water quality parameters that most directly determine fish welfare. In well-managed RAS facilities, dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, and ammonia can be maintained within optimal ranges continuously, eliminating the chronic stress of fluctuating environmental conditions common in ponds and cages. The technology also eliminates sea lice infestation risk for salmon, a major welfare problem in sea cage production. However, welfare benefits are not automatic — mechanical failures can cause rapid mass mortality events, lighting management must be species-appropriate, and stocking densities must still be monitored carefully. The high cost of RAS means it is currently economically viable only for premium species, limiting its welfare benefits to a small fraction of global aquaculture.
