Gastric dilatation and volvulus is a rapidly fatal emergency in large dogs. Recognition and immediate response saves lives and prevents prolonged suffering.
GDV causes severe abdominal pain and rapidly progresses to cardiovascular shock and death. The welfare impact of this condition — from the initial acute pain of gastric distension to the deterioration caused by blood supply compromise — is extreme and rapid. Every minute between onset and surgical intervention matters enormously for both survival and welfare. Owner recognition of symptoms and immediate emergency veterinary contact is the single most important factor determining outcome. Prophylactic gastropexy in high-risk breeds, discussed with a veterinarian, permanently prevents the volvulus component of GDV and should be seriously considered for deep-chested breeds at the time of desexing or another appropriate surgical opportunity.
