Manatees are among the most boat-strike vulnerable marine mammals. Understanding the welfare impacts of collisions and how prevention works helps protect this endangered species.
Manatee welfare is directly affected by human activity through two primary mechanisms: boat strikes and food source degradation. Boat propeller injuries cause acute, severe trauma — lacerations, fractured ribs, and spinal injuries — in animals that are slow-moving and spend time near the surface. Propeller scars on virtually every adult manatee in Florida represent a systematic welfare failure. Cold stress syndrome in winter, where manatees cluster at warm water outlets and become unable to thermoregulate when outlet temperatures fall, causes mass welfare emergencies requiring direct intervention. The 2021-22 starvation event, in which seagrass loss left thousands of manatees without adequate food, illustrates that individual welfare and ecosystem health are deeply interconnected for this species.
