Veal production has historically involved severe welfare restriction. Understanding different production systems helps consumers distinguish between welfare outcomes.
Veal welfare illustrates a complex ethical landscape where rejecting a product entirely can have worse welfare consequences than supporting a reformed version. Male dairy calves have no utility in dairy production — the choice for most is between immediate killing at birth and veal production of varying welfare quality. Rose veal programs that allow calves social housing, freedom of movement, and iron-sufficient diets provide several months of reasonable welfare before slaughter. This is better welfare than the alternative of immediate death and represents an improvement on the condemned traditional white veal system. Consumer rejection of all veal without distinguishing between production systems inadvertently increases the number of male dairy calves shot at birth — a welfare outcome arguably worse than well-managed rose veal production.
