Honeybee welfare sits at the uncertain edge of animal welfare consideration. Whether individual bees experience pain in a morally relevant sense is genuinely debated — their nervous systems are complex enough to have prompted research into bee sentience but lack the structures associated with consciousness in vertebrates. The welfare of colonies — complex superorganisms with their own collective wellbeing — is more clearly relevant. Colonies chronically stressed by Varroa mite infestation, pesticide exposure, and poor nutrition show reduced foraging, increased defensive behaviour, and ultimately collapse. The ecosystem services these colonies provide — pollination of food crops and wild plants — connect colony welfare to the broader welfare of many species. Integrated pest management that treats Varroa effectively while minimising chemical disruption of colony function represents best practice in bee welfare.
