The relationship between visitor presence and zoo animal welfare is more complex than simple "more visitors = more stress." Research reveals species-specific, individual-specific, and context-specific effects that require nuanced management responses. Some animals habituate well to visitor presence and show little stress response; others show persistent avoidance, stereotypic behaviour, or elevated cortisol in response to certain visitor behaviours — particularly tapping on glass, direct eye contact, and unpredictable movements. The welfare responsibility of zoo management is to design enclosures and visitor experiences that minimise stress-inducing visitor effects while maintaining the educational and conservation value of visitor access. Providing retreat spaces, managing visitor density and behaviour, and monitoring animal welfare indicators during visitor periods are practical management responses.
