Rope burns are painful injuries common in horses that can cause lasting welfare harm when improperly managed or when prevention measures are neglected.
Rope burn injuries cause acute and chronic pain that is often underestimated by owners who see what appears to be a superficial wound. Healing is complicated by the constant movement of lower limb structures and contamination from ground contact. Without appropriate wound management including cleaning, bandaging, and veterinary assessment for deeper involvement, horses suffer from prolonged inflammation, infection risk, and scarring that can permanently affect gait. Prevention through appropriate equipment choices and supervision is far preferable to treatment.
