Pig transport welfare is a concentrated welfare challenge accumulating multiple stressors in a short period. The combination of loading stress, motion sickness, thermal challenge, unfamiliar social mixing, and food and water deprivation creates significant cumulative welfare burden even for short journeys. Evidence supports maximum journey durations, minimum space allowances, and temperature management requirements that many commercial operations do not consistently achieve. Shorter journey distances through local slaughter infrastructure, improved vehicle design, and low-stress loading protocols represent the most impactful welfare improvements for transport.
