Elbow dysplasia is one of the most common causes of front leg lameness in large breed dogs. It causes lifelong pain and requires careful management to maintain quality of life.
Elbow dysplasia causes chronic joint pain that profoundly affects quality of life. Affected dogs may show subtle early signs — intermittent lameness, reluctance to exercise, or stiffness after rest — that are easily overlooked. Untreated, the condition progresses to severe osteoarthritis causing daily pain. Management combines pain medication, weight control, physiotherapy, and in some cases surgery. The welfare burden is substantial: many affected dogs experience pain from early adulthood throughout their lives. Breeding selection using elbow health scoring is the most important preventive measure at the population level.
