Red lechwe are semi-aquatic antelopes native to southern African floodplains. Their specialized ecological needs make appropriate housing in captivity an important welfare consideration.
Red lechwe welfare in captivity is best served by access to wetland areas or at minimum soft, moist ground that accommodates their adapted hooves. Hard or dry substrate causes hoof overgrowth, joint problems, and chronic discomfort. As highly social animals, they require group housing with appropriate sex ratios. Seasonal flooding simulation in enclosures supports natural behavioral cycles. Regular hoof assessment prevents welfare problems that develop slowly and are easily missed. Safari parks with access to water features and varied terrain provide significantly better welfare than conventional zoo paddocks.
