Modern elephant management in zoos has shifted from domination-based approaches to positive reinforcement training. This transformation has dramatically improved elephant welfare and keeper safety.
The shift to positive reinforcement training represents one of the most significant welfare improvements in zoo elephant management. Previously, free contact management relied on dominance and aversive tools including ankuses (bull hooks), causing chronic fear and psychological harm. Modern trained elephants voluntarily present feet for trimming, stand for veterinary procedures, and allow close inspection — dramatically improving healthcare quality and reducing stress. Training sessions themselves provide important cognitive stimulation for highly intelligent animals. The transformation demonstrates that excellent elephant care is achievable without coercion.
