Sea lice infestations cause chronic irritation, pain from open lesions, and immunosuppression in farmed salmon. Chemical treatments, while effective, themselves cause stress and can have non-target effects. Mechanical and thermal delousing treatments — though chemical-free — cause significant acute handling and thermal stress, with mortality risks. Cleaner fish used in infested cages face their own welfare challenges including injuries from salmon and inadequate access to resources. Integrated pest management approaches that minimize both lice burden and treatment stress provide the best welfare outcomes. Reducing farm stocking densities decreases lice transmission and treatment need.
