Tail docking causes acute pain that is not always managed with analgesia in commercial practice. Rubber ring application causes prolonged ischemic pain as the tail progressively loses blood supply and necroses over several days. Hot iron docking causes acute burning pain. Both methods cause behavioral pain responses including vocalizing, foot stamping, and tail wagging. Pain relief using local anesthesia and NSAIDs significantly reduces suffering when docking is performed. Alternatives to docking that prevent flystrike without routine surgical procedure represent better welfare outcomes and should be promoted through breed selection and management changes.
