Welfare Considerations

Shrimp welfare is an emerging area of concern as evidence for crustacean sentience grows. Eyestalk ablation without anesthesia likely causes acute pain and causes chronic hormonal disruption. High stocking densities impair normal behavior and increase stress hormones. Ice slurry immobilization is widely used for slaughter but evidence suggests it causes distress before loss of consciousness in crustaceans. The sheer number of shrimp farmed -- hundreds of billions annually -- means that even small per-animal welfare improvements have enormous aggregate impact. Welfare guidelines developed by Shrimp Welfare Project and others are beginning to reach producers.
