Separation anxiety affects millions of dogs worldwide and causes significant distress. Effective behavioral and medical treatment dramatically improves quality of life for affected dogs.
Separation anxiety causes genuine psychological suffering -- dogs with severe separation anxiety are in a state of panic when left alone, not simply behaving badly. The distress is comparable to a panic attack in humans. Behavioral modification through systematic desensitization to departure cues and graduated absences is effective but requires patience and consistency. Medication significantly accelerates behavioral treatment and is underused due to stigma. Environmental management including confinement to dog-safe areas, enrichment, and calm departures reduces acute distress. The pandemic cohort of dogs now requiring more independence is a significant welfare challenge requiring targeted intervention.
