Flat-faced dog breeds suffer from Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome and multiple additional welfare problems. Understanding these issues is essential for prospective owners.
Brachycephalic dogs experience chronic suffering that owners may not recognize because the signs have become normalized. Noisy breathing, snoring, and exercise intolerance are symptoms of respiratory disease, not breed personality traits. Sleep is disrupted by hypoxia. Heat stress can be rapidly fatal as these dogs cannot cool through panting effectively. The welfare problems are inherent to the extreme anatomy selected by breeders -- they cannot be fully corrected by treatment. The most impactful welfare intervention is reducing demand for extreme brachycephalic breeds and selecting for dogs with anatomically functional faces through breed standard reform.
