Sea lice treatments create a welfare dilemma -- untreated infestations cause chronic skin damage and pain, while treatments themselves cause acute stress and sometimes mortality. Chemical treatments delivered in bath or feed are least physically traumatic but carry environmental and resistance risks. Thermal and mechanical delousing cause significant acute stress from handling, crowding, and the treatment process itself. Mortality during mechanical treatment operations has been recorded at significant rates in some facilities. Integrated pest management that minimizes treatment need through management practices, monitoring, and early intervention provides the best welfare outcomes by reducing both lice burden and treatment stress.
