Binturongs, or bearcats, are arboreal mammals from Southeast Asian forests. Their welfare in zoos depends on providing appropriate climbing structures and scent-marking opportunities.
Binturong welfare in captivity requires complex three-dimensional climbing structures that allow arboreal behavior. Without adequate height and branch complexity, they show reduced activity and stereotypic pacing. Scent-marking substrates (rough bark, wooden posts) support normal communication behaviors. Diet should include fruit, small prey, and eggs to match their omnivorous habits. Social housing must be carefully managed, as binturongs are largely solitary and forced pairing causes stress and aggression.
