Welfare Considerations

The relentless urge to rub is distressing and some horses show clear signs of misery during peak midge seasons. Welfare-positive management includes Culicoides-proof rugs, stabling at dawn and dusk, barrier creams, antihistamines, and in severe cases veterinary corticosteroid treatment.

Use a specifically designed sweet itch rug (fine mesh) during high-risk dawn and dusk periods
Apply fly repellents and barrier creams to vulnerable skin areas regularly
Stable affected horses during peak Culicoides activity in summer months
Work with a vet to develop a corticosteroid or immunotherapy protocol for severely affected horses
