Idiopathic epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions in dogs. Modern anti-epileptic therapy allows most dogs to live comfortable lives with significantly reduced seizure frequency.
Epileptic seizures cause acute distress and post-ictal confusion lasting minutes to hours. Cluster seizures (multiple in 24 hours) and status epilepticus (seizures lasting over 5 minutes) are life-threatening emergencies. Long-term, poorly controlled epilepsy causes cumulative cognitive impairment. With good anti-epileptic therapy, most dogs achieve significant seizure reduction and maintain excellent quality of life. Owner anxiety is also reduced, improving the human-animal bond. Prompt treatment when epilepsy is diagnosed leads to far better welfare outcomes than delayed intervention.
