Pig Pen Design and Welfare Outcomes

Pig pen design profoundly affects welfare outcomes. Space allowance, substrate, air quality, and social management are all modifiable through design choices.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Pen design is one of the highest-leverage intervention points for pig welfare because it affects every pig in a system for their entire productive life. Overcrowded, bare, slatted pens create environments of chronic frustration where pigs cannot perform natural behaviors, suffer leg pain on hard flooring, and experience respiratory irritation from ammonia. High-welfare pen design is not dramatically more expensive per pig when considered over a production cycle, and increasingly, retailers and consumers are willing to pay a premium for demonstrably higher-welfare pork systems.
