Oysters are farmed at enormous scale worldwide. The question of whether they can suffer is scientifically debated, but the precautionary principle and emerging evidence deserve consideration.
Current scientific consensus is that oysters are very unlikely to experience pain or suffering in any morally significant sense, given their extremely simple nervous systems. However, as our understanding of invertebrate sentience evolves, maintaining epistemic humility is appropriate. The welfare considerations most relevant to oyster farming are primarily environmental (habitat impacts, disease management, genetic diversity) rather than individual animal suffering. For concerned consumers, oysters represent one of the most environmentally sustainable and low-welfare-risk animal proteins available.
