Semi-domesticated reindeer experience welfare harms during handling procedures — capture stress, physical restraint, marking, castration, and transport all cause measurable physiological stress. However, these animals live largely free-ranging lives and suffer far less chronic stress than fully domesticated livestock. The most significant welfare concern is climate-driven icing events causing mass starvation of thousands of animals. Traditional Indigenous management systems often incorporate welfare knowledge developed over centuries; externally imposed welfare standards must respect this context.
