Wolverine kit welfare is severely threatened by climate-driven reductions in spring snowpack. Females that lose their snow den due to early melt must either relocate kits (stressful and risky) or abandon them. Research in the US Rocky Mountains shows that kit survival is directly correlated with snowpack duration — years with early melt result in lower survival rates. Since wolverines reproduce slowly, kit mortality has outsized population-level consequences. Snow preservation through climate action is the only meaningful intervention to protect denning welfare at scale.
