Welfare Considerations

Proboscis monkey welfare in captivity is extraordinarily difficult to achieve. Their digestive physiology requires an essentially exclusive diet of leaves, seeds, and unripe fruit — ingredients that are highly perishable and difficult to source consistently. Inappropriate diet causes fatal acidosis from fermentation disruption. The few institutions that successfully keep proboscis monkeys have developed specialized browse programs and work closely with nutritionists. Their conservation status means that failed captive programs harm both individual welfare and genetic reserve value. For most zoos, proboscis monkeys are beyond appropriate care capacity.
