Pedal osteitis involves inflammation and demineralization of the pedal (coffin) bone. It causes chronic lameness and requires careful management to maintain comfort.
Pedal osteitis causes chronic sole pain that is often underrecognized because affected horses remain functional at reduced levels. Horses show reluctance to walk on hard or stony surfaces, shortened stride on forelimbs, and behavioral signs of discomfort when hooves are handled. Corrective farriery providing full sole support through bar shoeing dramatically reduces discomfort for most affected horses. Addressing underlying causes — sole depth improvement, hoof quality nutrition, surface management — prevents progressive deterioration and maintains long-term welfare in working horses.
