Trout in RAS environments depend entirely on mechanical and biological systems for basic physiological needs. Equipment failures can cause rapid welfare crises — oxygen depletion or ammonia spikes cause distress within minutes to hours. The absence of natural water flow patterns that trout use for orientation can itself be disorienting. High stocking densities, while economically motivated, stress a species evolved for relatively solitary existence in clear running water. However, RAS also offers welfare advantages: stable temperatures, protection from parasites, and controlled feeding.
