Dogs subjected to punishment-based training experience fear, pain, and chronic stress that affects their wellbeing far beyond training sessions. Shock collars deliver electric shocks; choke chains apply pressure to the trachea; physical punishments cause pain. These methods suppress behavior through fear — but they do not address the underlying motivation and often create fallout behaviors including aggression. Positive reinforcement training achieves the same behavioral goals through reward and understanding, producing dogs that are engaged, confident, and genuinely motivated to interact with their humans. The welfare case for humane training is clear, and increasingly so is the effectiveness case.
