RAS salmon production offers genuine potential welfare advantages — the absence of sea lice and environmental variability can provide more stable, less stressful conditions than net-pen alternatives. However, RAS is not automatically welfare-superior. Equipment dependence means that power outages, pump failures, or biofiltration breakdowns can cause rapid oxygen depletion and mass mortality. The intensity of monitoring required to prevent these events demands 24/7 vigilance. Stocking density in RAS is typically high — the enclosed system does not naturally dilute crowding stress. Early disease outbreaks in enclosed systems can spread rapidly without the natural dilution of open-water environments. The welfare promise of RAS depends entirely on operational management excellence.
