The shift from tail handling to tunnel handling in mice, for example, reduces measured fear responses and improves animal welfare during routine husbandry — a simple change with widespread applicability. Post-procedural analgesia practices have improved substantially as evidence on analgesic efficacy in rodents has expanded. However, implementation varies enormously across facilities, with some institutions leading on refinement practices while others lag. The development and validation of pain and distress assessment tools has been transformative, allowing welfare monitoring that was previously impossible. Regulatory requirements and peer pressure within the scientific community drive adoption of refinement practices.
