Boat strike injuries cause acute trauma including fractures, lacerations, and internal organ damage. Manatees that survive strikes often carry permanent injuries including flipper amputations and skull deformities that affect their long-term quality of life. Cold stress syndrome causes a syndrome resembling human hypothermia — lethargic, disoriented manatees that require rescue and warming treatment. The 2021 mass starvation event — driven by seagrass loss from water quality degradation — represented widespread prolonged suffering across a significant fraction of the entire Florida manatee population. Individual manatees weakened by starvation are more vulnerable to cold stress and boat strikes, creating compound welfare impacts.
