Welfare Considerations

Bear bile farming causes some of the most severe documented welfare harms in any commercial animal operation. Bears live in cages too small to turn around, with chronic infections from extraction methods, stereotypic behaviors, self-mutilation, and profound psychological abnormalities. The suffering is continuous and prolonged — bears may spend their entire adult lives in these conditions. The cruelty is compounded by the fact that it is entirely unnecessary: synthetic UDCA is widely available and has equivalent therapeutic properties to bear bile.
